How to Buy the Right Mattress

George Street Furnishers know that buying a new mattress will mean making some important decisions. You’ll need to consider what type of mattress you want and how much you want to spend, after all this is where you’ll be sleeping for years to come.

You can’t beat a good night’s sleep and The Sleep Council say: “An increasing amount of detailed sleep studies and accessible information means that we’re becoming more and more aware of the importance of sleep”.

Even if your mattress looks fine it still might be time to replace it, especially if you’re waking up with stiffness or aches and pains, you feel you’re not sleeping as well as you used to, or you’ve had a better night’s sleep in a different bed.

The National Bed Federation recommends you start to think about replacing your bed after seven years. They say: “Your bed may look okay but it may not be giving you the support or comfort you need for a healthy, refreshing night’s sleep”.

TAKE THE BED MOT

George Street Furnishers recommend you buy from a trusted brand, that’s why we only stock mattresses from high-quality suppliers, including Tempur, Relyon, and Hypnos.

ALWAYS TRY BEFORE YOU BUY

It can be more convenient to simply order your mattress online, but it’s always better to test it out first. Our top five tips for mattress buying are:

1.Wear something comfortable and remove your coat and shoes.

2.Sit on the edge of the mattress to test for firmness.

3.Lie on the mattress for at least 10 minutes in a position you’d normally sleep in.

4.Change position to see how easy you can move (especially if it’s a memory foam).

5.Make sure your new mattress will be a good fit for your existing bed frame.

If you’re buying a mattress for you and your partner, shop together and test it out by being side by side. You should both be able to lay with your arms behind your head and your elbows out without touching.

Height, weight, build and preferred sleeping position are things to consider when looking for the correct support. A mattress that moulds to the shape of your body and remains supportive is what you should be aiming for. When you lie on your side your spine should be horizontal and you should be able to turn fairly easily.

It’s better to shop for the mattress that is the best value, not the lowest price. After all, the better the construction, the better the support and comfort, meaning the bed will last longer.

There are lots of different types around and most manufacturers will offer mattresses in firm, medium and soft options. If you call into our Cardiff or Newport store we’ll be able to offer you expert advice and help you pick the right mattress for you and your family.
